Interactive AV installation with di. studio and Gyumri Technology Center
I was requested to add the sound dimension to an existing Kinect-based installation by the di. studio in Gyumri Technology Center.
di. studio already had Kinect-based interactive visuals ready. So I came up with a track that played on the background, and sounds connected to visitors' hand movements and the appearance of certain visuals on the displays.
I programmed the interactions in TouchDesigner and used Ableton Link to send midi data to Ableton.
"You find yourself in a hull of an abandoned spaceship on an unknown planet. It’s resonating, it’s dark there. It must have spent years there. Wild plants have already grown inside, some liquids are dropping, and you can hear strange subtle sounds.
You are not alone here. There is some creature living inside the hull – an insect or maybe a living algorithm, the edges between living and non-living are blurred here.
You are invited to enter this space, explore it, communicate with it."
There will be two components to the sound:
1) non-interactive component.
It comprises:
* soundscape (subtle ambient sound) – plays always as a backdrop
* the sound of the “algorithmic insect” – plays only when the ‘cellular automata-like’ pattern is displayed
2) interactive component
bright sounds that a user can play with

There are bright sounds in major on interaction
and more ambient, dull sounds in minor on background.

The farther away a user is from the installation, the brighter the interactive sounds are and they are playing at a slower rate. On the contrary, as the user approaches the installation, the rate of the playback increases and the sounds become more blurry, inviting the user to interact and play more with the installation.
